Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

Dear Parents/Carers of Year 1 pupils,

As you are aware, children in Year 1 are taught phonics every day to use as their main reading and spelling strategy. During the week beginning 9th June 2025, all Year 1 children in the country will sit a phonics test. The test will have 40 words a mixture of real & nonsense / alien words. The children must read words blended together and can sound out or draw sound buttons. They will be with a familiar adult and have no time limit. The children can take a break if needed.

After the test pupil results will be submitted to the Royal Borough of Greenwich. You will receive a letter at the end of term with your child school reports explaining their results and any Year 1 children who do not pass will re-take the test the following June.
